Essay 01 · Why social is in the retainer
Social Media is SEO.
Every Search + Social retainer includes social strategy, direction, scripts, editing and scheduling. Not to farm likes — because the posts themselves are doing search work now.

First, the part people get wrong
Likes do not lift rankings. Google has said so for over a decade: your follower count is not an input to its ranking algorithm, and the links a social post carries are usually nofollowed anyway. Asked point blank whether social signals move organic rankings, Google's John Mueller answered, “Not directly, no.”
So anyone who sells you a feed by promising it will push you up in Google is putting the wrong label on the product. We do not run social to farm likes, and we will never hand you a follower number and call it a result.
We run it because the posts themselves are findable now, and because they are the reason somebody types your name instead of a stranger's.
Your posts became pages
On July 10, 2025, Google began indexing public posts from professional accounts on Instagram and Facebook — photos, Reels and carousels published from the start of 2020 onward, as long as the account is public and marked professional. Meta's own help page now explains it to account holders.
That changes what a post is. A clip of your tech walking a homeowner through a water heater replacement is no longer only for the people who already follow you. It is a page that can surface when someone searches what that job is called, in the town you serve.
Which means the standards you would hold a web page to now apply to your feed: a caption that names the service and the city, a first three seconds that shows the actual work, a business name and bio that match the rest of your presence, and consistency about what you do so nothing has to be guessed.
A feed is a search result that hasn't been typed in yet.
The assistants read social too
AI search does the same thing with the same material. When Google's AI Overviews cite Instagram, the overwhelming majority of those citations point at Reels; Facebook citations lean toward native video. And the tide is rising: across AI engines, the share of citations going to social platforms measured roughly a third higher in April 2026 than in October 2025.
The honest number, because you should have it: social is still a thin slice of what the assistants cite. YouTube and Reddit lead, Instagram and TikTok trail. That is not a reason to skip it — it is the reason one-off posting fails. You are assembling a body of work an assistant can point at, not chasing a good week.
It is also why video carries so much weight in the shot lists we write. Short-form video is the format both Google and the assistants are most willing to quote back to someone looking for a business.
The search starts before the search
Roughly half of local mobile searches end in a visit to a business within a day. Most of those are won before anyone types anything.
Before a person searches “plumber near me”, a good number of them already have a name in their head — the one they keep seeing. Social is how you become that name. Then the branded search comes, and branded searches get clicked at rates the generic ones never touch.
That is the loop: the post puts the name in the head, the search confirms it, the phone rings. Neither half works on its own, which is exactly why we do not sell them apart.
What that means inside the retainer
Search + Social is one plan across both surfaces, with social treated as search work rather than a separate service bolted on the side. Concretely, that means:
- A strategy built around the services you most want to sell, not whatever is trending
- A shot list you can hand to whoever is holding the phone, so filming takes an afternoon
- Scripts, editing, captions and scheduling — you film, we handle post
- Captions and alt text written for the searches people actually type, in the city you serve
- The same service described the same way on your page, your profile and your feed
One body of work doing double duty: the search presence that brings people in, and the social presence that makes them remember who to call.
We've watched it happen
For Origin Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Electric we ran six accounts across two brands for three months — short-form video of real technicians doing real trade work, professional but funny enough to be shared. The same clips carried both brand names without a single stiff brochure.
Brothers BBQ came to us as a stagnant feed and left as a recognizable presence. Weld County Garage's vehicle video went on to be reused in a magazine placement — one shoot, two channels. At Florida Gulf Coast University, the account's following doubled while Blue ran it.
None of those were “just social” projects. They were brand-building that made the findability work easier.
What we won't do
We don't post to keep a feed warm. If a post cannot be tied to a service you want to sell or a reason to pick up the phone, it doesn't get made. Three good posts a week that map to real work beats a daily calendar of nothing.
§ FAQ
Questions, answered.
Does social media directly improve Google rankings?
No. Google has said for over a decade that likes, followers and shares are not ranking factors — asked directly, Google's John Mueller answered “Not directly, no.” Social media helps search differently: the posts themselves are now indexed as pages, AI engines cite social video, and a recognizable feed creates the branded searches that get clicked.
Why does the Search + Social retainer include social media management?
Because the posts do search work now. Since July 2025, Google indexes public Instagram and Facebook posts from professional accounts, and AI assistants increasingly cite social video when recommending businesses. Running search and social as one plan means the same body of work makes you findable and makes you the name people already have in their head.
Which social platforms matter most for search visibility?
YouTube and Reddit lead AI-engine citations overall. When Google's AI Overviews cite Instagram, the citations overwhelmingly point at Reels; Facebook citations lean toward native video. Short-form video is the format both Google and the assistants are most willing to quote, which is why it carries so much weight in our shot lists.
How often should a small business post on social media?
Three good posts a week that map to real services beat a daily calendar of filler. Every post should name the service and the city, show the actual work in the first three seconds, and give someone a reason to pick up the phone.
Who is Search + Social for?
Owner-led trades and home service businesses — HVAC, plumbing, landscaping, contractors — who measure marketing in booked jobs and phone calls, not impressions. You film from our shot list; we handle strategy, scripts, editing, captions and scheduling.
